Kristin Marrs
Kristin Marrs is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher of dance and Alexander Technique based in Iowa City, Iowa. A native Iowan, she is passionate about promoting the arts and arts education in her home state.
Kristin has performed as a company member of Columbus Dance Theatre, Ballet Quad Cities, Northern Ballet Theatre, Arova Contemporary Ballet, Paradise Ballet Theatre, Opera Columbus and Images of Dance. She has danced in works by George Balanchine, Frederick Ashton, Marius Petipa, Lynn Andrews, Penny Askew, Deanna Carter, Margaret Mead-Finizio, Kennet Oberly, Stella Kane, Maria Glimcher, Johanne Jakhelln, Alun Jones, Kim Robards, Bettijane Sills, and Tim Veach. Some of her favorite roles include the Milkmaid in Ashton’s Facade, the Snowy Egret Queen in Jones’ Nutcracker Key West, solo performance in Oberly’s Goldberg Variations.
Kristin’s choreography has been performed at universities and ballet companies around the United States. Recent collaborations include Con Moto, a multi-disciplinary performance ensemble co-founded with oboist Courtney Miller and lighting designer Peggy Mead-Finizio, and When Trees Say Nothing, created with fiber and paper artist Mary Merkel-Hess.
Kristin is an Associate Professor of Instruction at the University of Iowa and is faculty liaison to the UI Youth Ballet. Committed to progressive ballet pedagogy, she has presented her research at CORPS de Ballet International. Her article “Searching for the yet unknown: Writing and dancing as incantatory practices", collaboratively written with Kate Mattingly, can be found in the Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice. She is an AmSAT-certified Alexander Technique teacher, and teaches private lessons in Iowa City.
